Timbuk3 Founder Unveils
SparrowsWheel.org to Help Fund Local Public Radio Stations
Sparrows Wheel is a unique concept offering an alternative source of
funding to any non-profit Public Radio Station in need of funds and was
founded by Barbara Kooyman, former member of Timbuk3.
While with the hit group Timbuk3 Barbara was rewarded with accolades such
as a 1986 Grammy nomination as Best New Artist, a nomination for MTV’s
Best New
Artist Video, Texas Music Hall of Fame, and the Song of the
Decade for “The Future’s So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades,” a song that also
enjoyed Top 40 radio success. Timbuk3 played a plethora of shows with the
likes of Bob Dylan, Sting, Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Trudell, John
Denver, Jackson Browne and Kris Kristoferson, just to name a few. Their
television appearances included Saturday Night Live, Austin City Limits,
MTV and Solid Gold, among others.
With Sparrows Wheel’s first offering Undercover – the songs of
timbuk3, Barbara Kooyman uncovers the politically poignant and
socially seductive songs from her Timbuk3 back catalog. “I recorded
Undercover - the songs of timbuk3, in response to the crisis
facing our beloved public radio stations.” This is the first CD in what
promises to be a growing catalog of recordings of various artists, known
as the Artists Back Catalogue, all of which will be available as an
alternative source of funding to those in need. The schedule of releases
is timed to coincide with the fundraising efforts of Public Radio Stations
across the nation. In the future, as the catalog grows, the offerings of
100 percent of their projected profit - $5.00 per CD - will continue to be
offered to the Public Radio Station of the purchaser’s choice. As
Sparrows Wheel expands they will begin to aid non-profit environmental and
socially conscious organizations as well.
Here’s what people are saying about album:
"It's one of the Top 10 Albums of the
Year, and I don't say those things lightly. But I think it's a brilliant,
brilliant album." -- George Maida of WCVE Richmond VA
"Barbara Kooyman has chosen to
re-interpret her own past with 'Undercover', providing intimate acoustic
performances of some of the many gems from the Timbuk3 repertoire. For
casual fans who know T3's work only through 'Shades', these laid-bare
versions are a revelation. For true fans, Barbara's passion for the
material presents it from an entirely new angle." -- Jeff McCord, Music
Director KUT 90.5 FM Austin TX
